Performance gym

Based in downtown Syracuse, the gym + laundromat explores exercise as a performative art. With large glass openings framing activities such as cardio, swimming, weights, and racquetball, every aspect of the various programs is open to the public eye. Using the people exercising within the building as advertisement creates a visual connection between the interior and exterior, further facilitated by various decks, exterior seating spaces, and urban parks open to the public.

The gym is nestled within a diverse context consisting of concrete and steel high-rise buildings, as well as historic buildings dating back to the 1800s. Balancing the two, the gym acts as a mediator between the old and the new with its brick and glass facade.
