GROUNDSCRAPER

Groundscraper proposes a reinterpretation of a local building typology reflective of the unique in-between stage of development that Medellín occupies.  The vernacular terrace plan is a construction typology that develops at the scale of the individual.  Constantly growing, the building type develops vertically at different rates based on economic growth at the individual scale, eventually coming to house multiple generations of the same family.

The project scales up this vernacular typology and creates an outline of developmental rules that maintain the characteristic of individual authorship in a contemporary way, allowing for new and necessary amenities to be injected into two different sites: an urban site in the heart of the city and a rural site in the rapidly developing countryside.

By maintaining the core values, and architectural and material characteristics of this found typology, the project is able to ignite their immediate communities towards a more productive and lasting future.
